Enrichment Classes

Rooftop students have the option to attend a variety of after-school enrichment classes. While the PTA strives to offer programs with reasonable fees, scholarships may also be available depending on enrollment and financial eligibility.

When can I sign up?

You can sign up for the classes during the first week of school. However, it is encouraged to pre-enroll before the formal announcement within the first week of school to ensure your space will be reserved.  Contact the programs directly with any question you may have and to enroll.  Note that some enrichment classes will start the 2nd week of school. Some offerings are not available for students in Kindergarten, so please note the age offerings of each program.

Academic Chess

Grades: K-8

​​Devoted to promoting the merits of chess among children by using stories, dances, and catchy songs to make the game of chess exciting and easy to understand. Here is a short list of the many benefits of chess:

Estrellitas en Espanol: Spanish Program

Maestra Maggie's program is a hands-on active curriculum of music and movement, crafts, games, cooking, science, cultural adventures and much more!

 

Different teaching methods are incorporated such as The Natural Approach, The Seven Intelligences and Total Physical Response; bringing the language into their young bodies. Our class is about having fun, without pressure, so that children can establish a positive association with learning a new language. The most important requirement of a successful language class is that the content make the students smile as bright as little stars!

 

Please note, as of Fall 2024, we will be working with our co-existing partner, Maestra Maggie. She's been serving the Rooftop community since 2013 and left in 2019 due to shutdown.

Recently, we reconnected and she is excited to return to our Rooftop community!


STEM LEGO

In our STEM LEGO® class we use LEGO® bricks to teach concepts of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) through a

play-based model of learning. Kids construct a unique model each week using project instructions and LEGO kits. All models are interactive and classes are thematically linked to deepen and support a child’s understanding and vocabulary for STEM concepts.

Themes and builds are geared for our younger TK and Kinders graders. Free-play time rounds outs the class giving our students an opportunity to develop their creativity.


San Francisco Chinese Academy(SFCA): Mandarin Program

Grades: TK-5th

Language is best learned through social interaction and meaningful activities. Our highly-trained, caring teachers provide an enriching environment and engaging curriculum that immerses the children in Chinese language and culture. Students will have academic Mandarin lessons as well as fun activities related to Chinese culture and history, such as Chinese calligraphy, art and crafts, etc. The students will acquire Mandarin language and literacy skills through songs, poems, chants and stories.


San Francisco Math Circle: Math Program

Grade: 3rd-5th

The SF Math Circle is an extracurricular math enrichment program affiliated with the Center for Science and Math Education at San Francisco State University. SF Math Circle supports students from diverse backgrounds in developing their identities as capable, confident problem solvers. In our after-school classes and camps, we provide a supportive, collaborative, and fun environment where students explore engaging, hands-on puzzles and games that involve both creativity and critical thinking. Students explore these puzzles and games in small groups where they have the opportunity to collaborate with their peers and to receive personalized attention and support from SF Math Circle facilitators.
