This is the fourteenth year of the State ofCalifornia’s Standardized Testing and Reporting Program (STAR). All students in Grades 2-11 will be taking the California Standards Test (CST) and/or the California Modified Assessment (CMA) or the California Alternate Performance Assessment (CAPA). The purpose of the program is to find out how well students can perform in the basic school subjects. Students in Grades 2 through 8 are tested in Reading/Language Arts and Mathematics. Students in Grades 5, 8, and 10 are also tested in Science and students in Grade 8 are tested in Social Science. Students in Grades 9 through 11 are tested in Reading/Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Science.
In addition, all students in Grades 4 and 7 will be taking the California Writing Standards Test or the California Modified Assessment Writing Test. The purpose of the writing test is to see how well students are able to write in English. The students will be given a topic for writing and write on that topic.
During the summer, you will receive a report on how your child performed on the tests. The report will show areas of academic strengths as well as areas of weakness. The report will also have a Reading List Number which will help you select books best suited for your child’s reading level.
The writing test for Grades 4 and 7 will be given on March 6, 2012. The CST, CMA and CAPA for Grades 2 through 11, and will be offered from April 4 through May 3, 2012. It is important for your child to be in school on those days. If for any reason you do not want your child to take these important tests, please contact your school and speak to the principal.
