Po Bronson is the author of six bestselling books, including the #1 New York Times bestseller, “What Should I Do With My Life?” His most recent book, co-written with Ashley Merryman, is “NurtureShock: New Thinking About Children.” Their central premise is that many of society’s strategies for nurturing children are backfiring, because key twists in the science have been overlooked. NurtureShock was featured on Fresh Air with Terry Gross, ABC’s Nightline, and the cover of Newsweek. It made over 30 best of 2009 lists, was a New York Times bestseller for six months, and was one of Amazon’s Top 100 bestselling books of 2009. It’s also now being published in eighteen languages.
Po and Ashley’s writing about children has been honored by the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the Council on Contemporary Families. Their work has also won the Books for Better Life award, a Clarion, and a Mensa prize. Their cover story for Newsweek, “The Creativity Crisis,” won the PEN USA award for best literary journalism of 2010. Po lives in San Francisco with his family, while Ashley lives in Los Angeles, where she runs a church-based tutoring program for inner city children.
At our PTA Meeting, Po will be speaking about the science of creativity, as well as discussing material from the new book he’s currently writing, on the psychology and biology of the competitive spirit. Po’s book ‘Nurture Shock’ will be available for purchase at our meeting with proceeds benefitting our Rooftop PTA programs.
