Parent/teacher conference week is fast-approaching! Students will be dismissed an hour early (12:50 p.m.) the week of November 16 to accommodate parent/teacher conferences. If your child does parent pick-up, you will need to arrange for an earlier pick-up. Students may not be on the yard unsupervised during conferences. Please contact CASA (firstname.lastname@example.org) to arrange drop-in childcare if you are unable to get your child by 1 p.m.
We were thrilled to have renowned literacy expert, Stephanie Harvey, join us at Rooftop on Thursday! Ms. Harvey was invited to Rooftop as a part of our ongoing academic work focused on literacy instruction (particularly around nonfiction), and the implementation of the Common Core Standards. During her visit to Rooftop, Ms. Harvey modeled comprehension strategy lessons for teachers. Following each of her demonstrations, Ms. Harvey debriefed the lesson with the teachers. At the end of the day, Ms. Harvey met with the entire Rooftop staff to discuss literacy instruction. Prior to the start of the school year, all teachers were provided with their own “Comprehension Toolkit” that contains a variety of tools to support the teaching of nonfiction reading strategies including support for small group instruction, English Language Learners, independent practice, and whole group instruction. Additionally, teachers were provided with copies of Connecting Comprehension and Technology.
Ms. Harvey’s biography:
Stephanie Harvey has spent her career teaching and learning about reading and writing. After fifteen years of public school teaching, both in regular education and special education classrooms, Stephanie worked for twelve years as a staff developer for the Denver based Public Education and Business Coalition (PEBC), a partnership of leaders from education and business, who support innovation in public schools.
Insatiably curious about student thinking, she is a teacher first and foremost and currently serves as a private literacy consultant to schools and school districts. In that role, she conducts keynote speeches, presentations, workshops, demonstration lessons, coaching sessions and ongoing consultation to teachers, reading specialists, literacy coaches, principals and district administrators. With a focus on K-12 literacy, her specialties include comprehension instruction, inquiry-based learning, content area reading and writing, nonfiction literacy, and the role of passion, wonder and engagement in teaching and learning.
Stephanie has written many articles, books and resources; her Heinemann publications include the title Comprehension and Collaboration which she co-authored with Smokey Daniels, and “The Comprehension Toolkit” series which is an in-depth Curricular Resource for comprehension instruction co-authored with Anne Goudvis.
