First day instructions

The following instructions will help you and your family to prepare for your first day at Rooftop.

Dropping off your kindergartner (start of school day)

Please arrive early (parking is difficult) and do the following:

  • Make sure your child’s name tag is filled out and put in his name tag holder
  • Check in at the Welcome Table located in the Kindergarten yard
  • Walk your child to his/her class, and,
  • When school starts at 7:50 a.m., say goodbye to your child and promptly go to the Multi-Purpose Room (follow the path to the second floor of the building) for refreshments with the administration and PTA.

Picking up your kindergartner (end of school day)

Your child will be released from class at 1:50 p.m. at which time a teacher will escort him/her to the appropriate bus and/or parent pick-up line.

If your child is going to take a bus after school, make sure his/her bus stop number and bus stop name is on his name tag. A teacher will escort your child to the appropriate bus. Please make sure you or your representative is at the bus stop on time to meet the bus.

If you are going to pick up your child at school, please wait for him/her at the bottom of the school’s driveway on Corbett Avenue. At 1:55 p.m., a teacher will walk the parent pick-up children down the hill. Please do not be late. Kindly do not block our neighbors’ driveways when parking your car. If you desire to pick up your child early, please go to the office first. If your child is not picked up a teacher will escort him/her to the office where you will be called.

If you change where your child is to go after school, you must notify his/her teacher in writing (signed and dated). Without any written notification, your child’s teacher will follow your child’s regular routine. PLEASE DO NOT CALL THE SCHOOL TO CHANGE YOUR CHILD’S AFTER SCHOOL PLANS. DUE TO SECURITY RISKS, NO CHANGES WILL BE ACCEPTED BY TELEPHONE.

Drop off / Pick up instructions Corbett Avenue

All drop-offs and pick-ups are on Corbett Avenue only. PLEASE DO NOT ENTER SCHOOL FROM BURNETT STREET. The Burnett parking lot is for STAFF ONLY. Please do not drive nor walk down the Burnett Street driveway or park in the lot as you will be blocking service vehicles and/or teachers.

Should you decide to do “stop and drop” in the morning, please pull your car all the way to the curb on either side of Corbett (being careful not to block the lane of traffic), let your child out and then drive on. There are many cars that need to do just the same and it goes much smoother if everyone is considerate. A crossing guard and an administrator will be present to ensure your child gets across the street (if needed) and up the hill to his/her class safely.

What to send TO SCHOOL

The list of items below will help your child to be comfortable during the school day:

Backpack

Roomy enough to transport snack, lunch, and important papers/homework to and from school, but not so big that your child struggles with it. Be sure that your child can open and close his/her backpack (and lunch box) by himself/herself (practice at home). Please check your child’s backpack every day.

Labels

Put your child’s name on his/her lunchbox, snack containers, backpack, jacket, sweaters, etc. Any unlabeled items will be put in the “Lost and Found Box” located just inside the main entrance to the building off the yard.

Name Tags

Please fill in your child’s full name, and his/her after-school plans. Please make sure you list your day time phone number and the phone number of your child’s after-school program (if any). You will receive the bus stop information at the orientation. IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT YOUR CHILD’S NAME TAG INDICATES WHERE YOUR CHILD IS TO GO AFTER-SCHOOL (INCLUDING THE BUS NUMBER/STOP AND/OR PARENT PICK-UP). Please put this name tag on your child for the first two weeks of school so that we can be sure he/she gets to the right location after school.

Healthy Snack

Please send a healthy snack for your child to eat at recess at 9:20 a.m. Healthy snack ideas include: fruit, nuts, cheese, crackers, dried fruit, yogurt, etc. We encourage students to eat their own snack so please make sure they have enough things they will eat. PLEASE DO NOT SEND: gum, candy, soda, cookies, other sugary items, chips, etc

Lunch

You can send a lunch with your child or buy a District prepared lunch for $3.00 (incl. milk). Your child may qualify to receive this lunch free or at a reduced rate. The forms to qualify for a free or reduced cost lunch will be sent home the first week of school. The District will send home a monthly menu. The menu is available on their website at www.sfusd.k12.ca.gov and on our school website.

Please send cash only to purchase the school lunch. We encourage you to to sign up with SFUSD’s prepayment and online monitoring system — MealpayPlus.com. You can track your child’s lunches and receive balance notifications.

While children are with yard supervisors at lunch, it is not possible to monitor what your child eats, or throws away. A helpful strategy is to involve your child in the food selection process. Please make sure your child can open his/her lunch containers.

Please do not send the following with your child to school:

  • Toys, stuffed animals
  • Candy, gum, soda pop, jell fruits
  • Radios, iPods, cameras, beepers or other expensive items (they will be confiscated).
